C.J. Brown

Seneca Valley

Last week: Brown completed 25 of 37 passes for 304 yards and rushed for 85 yards in a 38-33 victory against Erie McDowell.

Check this out: Brown (6 feet 3, 190 pounds) has thrown for 605 yards in two games and leads the WPIAL in passing yardage. He made a verbal commitment to the University of Maryland in the spring and also projects to be one of the best basketball players in Class AAAA this season.

You guys run the spread offense. Is that a quarterback's dream? Yes and no. If you're throwing interceptions and getting sacked, you won't like it. For me, I love it.

You only had a few scholarship offers when you committed to Maryland. Would you have more offers if you would've waited to make a decision? If a school still wants to come after me, they can. I'm still happy with my decision for Maryland and I'm looking forward to going there.

Isn't basketball still your favorite sport? Yeah, it is. Basketball is my thing. Playing the game of football is still new to me. I only started playing in ninth grade. I think basketball is a blast to play and I'm looking forward to playing this year, too.

You only will be 17 at election time, but who would you vote for president? That's a tough one. I'd say whoever is going to fix gas prices.

Something that bothers you about high school kids? Probably just the maturity level and not acting your age.

People might be surprised to know that you ... [Detroit Tigers manager] Jim Leyland used to be my manager for travel team baseball when I was younger.

Kayla Eckman

Last week: A senior forward on the girls' soccer team, Eckman helped the squad to two wins -- one against Valley and the other against Shady Side Academy, scoring six goals in the win against Valley.

Check this out: She scored 32 goals while earning all-state honors a year ago and has made a verbal commitment to Ohio State. She said she also considered Penn State, Maryland and Virginia.

Playing at Freeport, do you feel like you get forgotten about sometimes because the school is a little far from Pittsburgh? Not really. I think our team does well and that helps. Because of that, we get a lot of recognition.

What are the most goals you have scored in one game? I can't remember the game, but I remember scoring eight. I was little, probably 13 and my dad was the coach.

Did you play any other sports growing up? When I was young, I didn't play anything else, and soccer was my life. Then I did track my freshman year and then basketball my sophomore year, and lettered in both. But I went back to just doing soccer.

Could you be a kicker on the football team? Actually I used to try to kick footballs with my dad in our yard. I know I could do it.

It is late, you need a snack. You eat ... ? My late snack is chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream.
