No local golfers qualify for U.S. Open

None of the eight players from Western Pennsylvania made it through sectional qualifying into the U.S. Open.

The closest was mini-tour player Mike Van Sickle of Gibsonia, who finished tied for 13th after shooting 73-72 Monday at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md.

Nevillewood instructor Kevin Shields (70-78, T25), four-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Nathan Smith (74-75, T31) and Oakmont professional Bob Ford (74-77, T41) missed out in Purchase, N.Y.

In Columbus, Ohio, Web.com Tour player Steve Wheatcroft of Washington, Pa., shot 73-80; amateur Justin Moose of North Huntington shot 79-78 and amateur Luke Miller, 17, of Venetia, shot 85-79.

At Memphis, Tenn., mini-tour player Dan Obremski Jr. of Irwin shot 70-72 and finished tied for 41st.
