Since Joe Louis Arena is apparently built to withstand a nuclear holocaust, we had trouble sending pictures through our camera phone. Here they are a day later:

-A stage TSN set up outside the arena:

EN friend Jason Yarosik told us a Penguins fan yelled at Mike Milbury, "Hey Milbury! Ulf Samuelsson is coming to get Cam Neely!"

-Some fans wait outside:

-A family of Sidney Crosby fans:

(Although "Claudia" seems to think she's more important than the team's captain. Jerk.)

-Some Penguins fans walking over from the riverfront:

-These Penguins fans were actually from Canada:

-They lowered the scoreboard to ice level prior to the game:

(That guy eye-balling us must've thought we were going to throw rock salt or antifreeze on the ice.)

-This was the view we had for most of the game:

-We took a walk around the concourse. The feeling was absolutely electric:

(And also blurry apparently.)

-Mario Lemieux:

-Tim Cheveldae:

(That more than made our day. When we were kids, Tim Cheveldae was our favorite goaltender. He had a cool name and his mask had this pseudo-Corvette logo on it.

-Detroit throwback:

-Sidney Crosby and Marc-Andre Fleury:

-You can buy hats with plush octopuses on them:

-This group of fans started a "Let's Go Pens!" chant at about 6:50 p.m. that carried on throughout the arena pretty well:

-Louis Skolnick was apparently at the game:

(No word yet where Takashi was.)

-Things got purple:

-The national anthem:

-This is what it looked like when Detroit scored its first goal:

-We swear that's Bob Errey on the left and Larry Murphy on the right:

-Walking back to our car after game, we came across this guy:

robertsback

(That's a Gary Roberts Maple Leafs jersey with some alterations.)

-The Pensblog had some photos of the anthem being played at Mellon Arena.

-The Sidney Crosby Show rounded up some good photos from professional photographers (as opposed to schlubs like us using our camera phone.)

WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON ADVANCES

-It's not all bad in Penguin land today. Tim Brent's goal with 30 seconds left in regulation gave the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins a 3-2 win against Portland in the seventh game of their playoff series.

-The Penguins will face Chicago in Game 1 of the AHL final Thursday.

-Brent is a "playoff guy."

-The Penguins almost blew a 2-0 lead.

STATE OF THE UNION

-We attended Bettman's "state of the union" address. After Bettman read off a list of all the league's accomplishments, the NHL's head PR flack let Gary Green from the NHL Network ask what seemed like this prepared "How awesome is the NHL?" softball question. Sure enough, Bettman read off this seemingly prepared "This is how the NHL is awesome," response. We wanted to vomit.

-We asked Bettman about ticket prices rising and if sales are a problem in the current economy. He basically just bragged about how the NHL isn't as expensive as other sports.

-Bettman says all is well. (He actually got into this snotty little argument with the gentleman who wrote this piece. Bettman made it a little personal.)

-Bettman is happy the Penguins stuck around in Pittsburgh.

-James Mirtle has the transcript.

EMPTY NETTER ASSISTS

Playoff Stuff

Penguins

-Dave Molinari's recap from last night's game.

-According to Ron Cook, it wasn't Marc-Andre Fleury's night.

-The Penguins are dealing with pressure.

-Game 1 was a nightmare for the Penguins.

-Fleury falling onto the ice last night:

-Larry Murphy is on both sides of this battle.

-Media day video.

-If the Detroit wins, they get Primanti's. If Pittsburgh wins, we get Little Ceasars. Yeah, that seems fair.

Red Wings

-Gene Collier says the Red Wings were dominant, but they're beatable.

-Chris Chelios did not play in Game 1.

-Mikael Samuelsson took advantage of the Penguins' mistakes.

-Samuelsson HATES the Penguins.

-Samuelsson isn't used to scoring goals.

-Samuelsson (he was a popular guy to write about for some reason) now has three two-goal games in his playoff career.

-The Red Wings play some good defense.

-Tomas Holmstrom is a marked man.

-Why do they call it "Hockeytown?"

-If you're a Detroit sports fan, Saturday night was dream or a night mare.

-Jerry Green of the Detroit News is apparently that paper's "old people did stuff better than young people" columnist.

-What the right technique for throwing an octopus?

-This game wasn't what a lot of people expected.

-Henrik Zetterberg could be a king.
