College Basketball Roundup: Hoyas hold off WVU Riley scores 23 points to spark Georgetown Tuesday, March 04, 2003 From wire and local dispatches
Gerald Riley scored 23 points as Georgetown beat West Virginia, 69-67, last night in Morgantown, W.Va., to clinch a spot in the Big East tournament.
Mike Sweetney added 18 points and 16 rebounds for the Hoyas (14-12, 6-9 Big East), who squandered a 14-point lead in the second half but won it at the foul line, making 6 of 8 foul shots in the final minute.
West Virginia trailed by two points with 2.6 seconds remaining but had a chance to win it at the buzzer. But Drew Schifino, trying to draw contact, flopped to the ground after shooting an off-balance 3-pointer that missed as time expired.
Schifino scored 21 points to lead the Mountaineers (13-14, 4-11), who have lost a season-worst five in a row and 11 of their past 14 Big East games.
West Virginia, which trailed, 48-34, with just under 17 minutes remaining, gradually chipped away at the Hoyas' lead and tied it, 63-63, on a Kevin Pittsnogle dunk with 1:20 left.
Tony Bethel and Sweetney each made two free throws in the final minute for Georgetown.
Brandon Bowman finished with 11 points for the Hoyas.
Jo Herber scored 12 points and Patrick Beilein added 10 for West Virginia, which is in danger of missing the Big East tournament for the second consecutive year.
