College Basketball Roundup: No. 4 Ohio State pulls out victory

Ohio State finally got a test away from Columbus and managed to get a win in a hostile environment.

Deshaun Thomas scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and the No. 4 Buckeyes beat Rhode Island, 69-58, Saturday in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off tournament in Connecticut.

Lenzelle Smith Jr. added 15 points, and Aaron Craft had 13 points and four assists for Ohio State (2-0), which struggled with the Rams (0-3) well into the second half. Xavier Munford had 16 points to lead Rhode Island, which had four players in double figures and trailed by just four at halftime.

"We're going to know a lot more about our basketball team at 6:30 then we did coming into this tournament," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. "I think this will be good for our team in terms of growth."

• Memphis 65, Samford 54: Adonis Thomas scored 16 points and Antonio Barton added 14 as No. 17 Memphis (2-0) escaped with a home victory in an opening game of the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament.

• San Diego State 60, Missouri State 44: Jamaal Franklin scored 15 of his 22 points in the first half to put the No. 23 Aztecs (2-1) up early, and James Rahon hit a 3-pointer late in a win at Missouri State (1-1).

Big East

• Notre Dame 78, BYU 68: Jack Cooley had 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead No. 20 Notre Dame (3-1) to a victory against BYU (2-2) in the third-place game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in Brooklyn.

• Washington 84, Seton Hall 73: Abdul Gaddy scored 16 points and the Huskies (2-1) eat Seton Hall (2-1) in overtime in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off tournament in Connecticut.

• South Florida 68, Loyola 50: Kore White scored 15 points, Anthony Collins added 11, and host South Florida (2-1) beat Loyola of Chicago (2-2).

• DePaul 98, Austin Peay 67: Cleveland Melvin scored 26 points and Brandon Young added 17 as DePaul (2-1) routed Austin Peay (1-2) in Cancun.

Women's Top 25

• West Virginia 75, South Carolina Upstate 45: Bria Holmes scored a game-high 14 points off the bench as No. 14 West Virginia (3-0) won easily in Morgantown.

• Baylor 82, Tennessee-Martin 67: Brittney Griner scored 18 points and broke the NCAA women's record with her eighth career dunk to lead No. 1 Baylor (3-1) to a victory in the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu.

• Duke 84, Presbyterian 45 Tricia Liston and Haley Peters each scored 21 points, leading No. 3 Duke (1-0) to a rout.

• Saint Joseph's 50, Maryland 49: Chatilla van Grinsven scored 18 points and Saint Joseph's (2-1) stunned No. 5 Maryland (2-1) at home.

• Ohio State 78, Winthrop 53: Darryce Moore and Tayler Hill scored 16 points apiece as No. 20 Ohio State (2-1) cruised to a home win.
