NEW YORK -- No. 5 seed Syracuse defeated No. 12 seed Seton Hall, 75-63 this afternoon in a Big East tournament second-round game. Syracuse advanced to the quarterfinal round and will play No. 4 Pitt at 2 p.m. Thursday at Madison Square Garden.

Pitt (24-7) beat Syracuse (24-8) in their only meeting during the regular season 65-55, at the Petersen Events Center, but Orange senior James Southerland sat out that game with an eligibility issue.

Southerland was 6 for 9 from 3-point range and scored 20 points to lead the Orange past Seton Hall. The score was tied, 34-34, at halftime, but Syracuse dominated the Pirates in the second half and coasted to an easy victory.

The Panthers have won 14 of the past 18 against the Orange. In the Feb. 2 game, Pitt received 13 points from senior guard Tray Woodall and Pitt's bench outscored Syracuse's bench, 31-3. Reserve guard Cameron Wright broke a 35-35 tie midway with a 3-pointer midway through the second half to give the Panthers the lead for good.

It was the 14th victory against the Orange in the past 18 meetings.
