The Professor: Ed, the clock is ticking on getting rid of or at least reducing Timmons' albatross contract. Can we expect something to get done before tomorrow?
Ed Bouchette: The Steelers are under the enough that they do not have to do that immediately. I would suspect they will eventually do something with that contract -- extend, reduce, whatever.
Nathan from KC: Gay signing pretty much confirms the team isn't bring back Boykin? Thoughts?
Ed Bouchette: I have said all along I did not think Boykin would return. They didn't use him when he was here until later in the season. I believe he may have more value to someone else who appreciates what he can do.
GjSteel: Hi Ed, so far the Steelers have done what we usually expect in their offseason moves..signing some of their own. Question..if you are bad at pass defense...does signing your own make you any better?
Ed Bouchette: Here's another question: How can you sign anyone else until free agency begins Wednesday at 4 p.m.? Answer: You can't. I think most reasonable people would agree that re-signing Robert Golden and William Gay were good moves to keep some depth at positions in which they have none. It does not mean they are announcing they have ended their pursuit of secondary help.
Jud: Do you think there will be any repercussions from Williams comments?
Ed Bouchette: Such as??? I don't think he crossed any lines, from what I saw, if that is what you mean. He was merely expressing opinions about Peyton Manning.
Paco Rangel: Why Shazier started to call plays instead of Timmons? Smarter? It was only his second year
Ed Bouchette: He played the position in which the plays are supposed to be called.
AAA: Who starts opposite William Gay? Golson, Cockrell, draft pick or free agent?
Ed Bouchette: Yes, all are possibilities. But I think their plans for Golson is to play inside in the nickel, but they won't limit him to challenging to start either.
Touchdown Joey: Ed, did they sign Robert Golden to compete for a starting job? If so, compete with who? They need to sign a veteran safety, am I right?
Ed Bouchette: I agree that they should try to sign a veteran safety and there are a ton of them in free agency, perhaps the strongest position available. However, remember that there are 6 months to go before they kick off for real, plenty of time to do something.
steelersrb26fan: With Eric Weddle responding to that steelers fan out of all the tweets sent to him would you think that's means he even has the smallest bit of interest in Pittsburgh
Ed Bouchette: He has interest in Pittsburgh, I would assume, as long as the money is there. He says he wants to go to a team that has a chance to win a championship and has been making goo-goo eyes at the Patriots.
Marc: Ed. Love your work and sense of humor. Who is your free agent not on the roster today that can make the defense better?
Ed Bouchette: Eric Weddle would do it, but I don't see it happening. eorge Iloka of Cincinnati would be another safety to look at. I don't think there are many corners at the moment. If they sign one of those, I think they will wait awhile and get one at a more reasonable price. As Gerry Dulac pointed out, tight end Ladarius Green might be a good fit, from San Diego.
Patrick from Newport News: Hi Ed, thanks for the chats, I enjoy them a lot. I'm hearing rumors of Ngata (sp?) being on the radar. Do you feel he could be helpful given his age, if he could be obtained at a good price? He sure gave us trouble over the years.
Ed Bouchette: I do not see where you would play him other than nose tackle and they do not play the nose tackle as much anymore. They are set at both ends. I don't see that one happening.
Dimitrios: In reviewing all the "expert" mock drafts it appears that the Steeler's 1st round pick will be down to Apple, Fuller or Jackson III if they go CB. Who would you take?
Ed Bouchette: Apple, but don't hold me to that because there's a lot of time between now and the draft.
Krystle: Will there be any repercussions on AB from the Steelers, if he gets injured on Dancing with the Stars?
Ed Bouchette: I don't think so, but if he does, that would be a non-football injury and technically they would not have to pay him.
Go Steelers!: Hi Ed, do you think McLendon will get re-signed? Seems kind of important considering the lack of depth.
Ed Bouchette: I agree that he is important to that defense even if they don't use a NT as much. He can also play DE, as he did a little last year.
Kip: I know a lot of people want weddle or a high caliber DB like him. What do you think of Rodney mccloud?
Ed Bouchette: Pro Football Focus lists him as the No. 4 safety available in free agency. He started 3 years. He is more a free safety, though, and you'd either have to switch Mike Mitchell to strong safety or play a lot of 2-deep.
Kevin in Punxsy: Is Antwon Blake a FA? If so, do you think that MT will bring back his best bud? Thanks
Ed Bouchette: Yes, right now Blake is on schedule to be UFA tomorrow. Steelers could sign him before that. Again, if they do, doesn't mean he will start.
Robbie: Other than the obvious of Swan, what 70s steeler would have won dancing with the stars?
Ed Bouchette: Not sure, but I would really have enjoyed seeing Lambert do it.
JOE: Is jarvis jones a starter for sure on 2016?
Ed Bouchette: I would say yes with another heavy dose of James Harrison.
MarkFromBonnietahn: Other than James and Spaeth, who is the most likely third tight end in their rotation this year?
Ed Bouchette: He is not yet on the roster.
MarkFromBonnietahn: What is the likelyhood that Foster resigns with Steelers? Do you see this resigning as a must, as it would handtie the team to draft a guard early if not?
Ed Bouchette: If they sign Kelvin Beachum, I don't see Ramon Foster returning. It's rare they give big contracts to all 5 OL starters -- in fact, I don't know they ever have -- and Beachum would make four if they do so, joining Gilbert, Pouncey and DeCastro
Justin: Any chance Foster or Beachum sign before tomorrow?
Ed Bouchette: Yes, I think there's a chance.
BradshawsHairdresser: As far as the DHB signing, isn't $1 million + per year a bit much for a 5th-6th WR/STs player?
Ed Bouchette: The minimum salary for those players is nearly $1 million.
Robbie: Long shot, but could you see them signing Alex Mack and moving pouncey to guard?
Ed Bouchette: No
MarkFromBonnietahn: Last year Pouncey was injured, the team put him on the IR Designated to Return List, yet he never returned. It was rumored that his surgery went poorly or that it got infected, thus setting him back. Why haven't we heard anything since? Is he expected to be ready for training camp?
Ed Bouchette: That was more than rumors. It was infected and he did have another surgery to clean it up. All indications are, he will be ready to go next season.
TBurg_Pete: Mr. Bouchette, Who do you think is the better OL signing ( if the B&G can get one back), Foster or Beacham? Thanks!
Ed Bouchette: They believe Beachum, which goes with the importance of the LT position.
Christopher: Calvin Johnson a HOFamer??
Ed Bouchette: Give me five years to think that over, but those who say he is automatic on his first try should look at how T.O. did this year.
Guest: Can Golden be a legitimate starter at safety, and not just a placeholder? I thought he did fairly well when he played last year.
Ed Bouchette: He keeps improving and that is something that intrigues them for such a young age. Also his special teams play. There was another undrafted safety who cut his team on special teams and, like Golden, was elected special teams captain. He then found his way into the starting lineup at safety. His name is Donnie Shell.
Rob: Since Tony Dungy won one Super Bowl do you think Bill Cowher who also won a Super Bowl should be in the Hall of Fame?
Ed Bouchette: I don't think Tony Dungy was elected based on winning one Super Bowl.
Patrick from Newport News: Should the team re-sign Spence for depth, even if he's an expensive backup? It seems like Shazier throws himself around like a human missile and may possibly ding himself up enough again in the future. I think he would be worth at least as much as Golden, he's played well when called upon. But he has a history of injuries ...
Ed Bouchette: If they re-sign Spence, it won't be expensive.
HereWeGo7: Chances of getting RG3 as a backup? Do you have enough confidence in Landry if Ben goes down for a long period of time?
Ed Bouchette: Blutarsky. 0.0
Jud: Do you think any of our TEs will get even close to the Heath level of production? (blocking / catching / clutch performance)
Ed Bouchette: No. He was a special talent.
Krystle: Mike Wallace is a free agent, did the Heyward-Bey signing kill any hope of a Steelers reunion?
Ed Bouchette: I think that died a long time ago.
Guest: Do you really think that a team will bite on Suisham and trade us a pick? I think the Steelers' bluff would be a simple one to call.
Ed Bouchette: It worked for Jacksonville last year when they traded their kicker to the Steelers, so maybe.
MarkFromBonnietahn: What is the likelihood that Allen is a June 1 cut?
Ed Bouchette: I keep predicting he will not be on the team in 2016. I think they will wait to see what they get in the draft and possibly free agency, but I still do not see him on the roster for the first game of the season.
Tommy Maddox: Is there one player on your board who you think the Steelers would trade up for? or could you see them trade down to make up for the lost draft picks?
Ed Bouchette: I don't see them moving up or down this year. OK, slightly down if someone sees a player they really want and the Steelers have no interest in him. But moving up, I think, is out of the question.
WAROnTheRock: No mention whatsoever of Mike Adams...he is *done* an'at as a Stiller?
Ed Bouchette: His back problems were worse than what they let on. I'm not sure where he is in his training, but I don't think they're counting on him. If he comes in and does anything, he could compete for No. 3, provided they don't sign Beachum back. I just don't have much confidence he will be on the team in 2016.
Dom: Looks like Hunter Henry could be Heath 2.0. Your thoughts?
Ed Bouchette: He's someone high on the lists as a possible first-round draft pick for the Steelers. Not mine.
Kevin in Punxsy: Just saw a report that MT criticized D Williams for his P Manning tweet? Thoughts?
Ed Bouchette: I haven't seen that report.
Guest: They signed Vick, so RG3 is so ridiculous???
Ed Bouchette: Yes.
Ed Bouchette: Thanks for another great chat. We will have to change next week's to another day, perhaps Wednesday. Consult your guide for details.
