High school highlights: California rallies to remain only perfect WPIAL team



California needed a late rally Tuesday to remain perfect.

The Class A No. 1 Trojans (16-0, 10-0) scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to get past No. 5 Carmichaels (10-2, 7-2), 6-5, in Section 1.

Jake Columbus scored what turned out to be the winning run when Casey Zajicek reached on an error.

California is the WPIAL's lone remaining unbeaten team.

Other top baseball games

■ Jordan Yates had three hits, including a bases-clearing double, to help host Beaver (9-5, 9-4) hand Class AA No. 1 Neshannock (17-1, 13-1) its first loss, 6-4, in Section 5.

■ With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Dom Zboyovsky beat out an infield single to give Monessen (8-6, 7-3) a 6-5 victory against Class A No. 4 Serra Catholic (10-5, 7-2) in Section 2. Justice Rawlins struck out nine and earned the win.

■ Class AA No. 4 Quaker Valley (13-2, 11-2) won its 10th consecutive game, defeating No. 3 South Side Beaver (15-2, 12-2), 10-3, in Section 1. Peyton Russoniello had two RBIs for the visiting Quakers.

Top baseball performers

■ Ryan Novotney threw a no-hitter, struck out 13 and helped his cause with a two-run home run to lift host Brownsville (12-5, 10-3) to a 10-0 victory in six innings against Fort Cherry (3-10, 3-9) in Class AA Section 2.

■ In wins against Avonworth, 9-1, and Seton-LaSalle, 10-7, Riley Smith of New Brighton (9-6, 8-4) went a combined 7 for 9 with six RBIs, four of which came on a walk-off grand slam against Seton-LaSalle in Class AA Section 1.

Top softball game

■ Lauren Zola pitched a four-hitter, striking out 12, to help Class AA No. 4 Seton-LaSalle (10-1, 9-1) notch a 4-1 home win against No. 3 Keystone Oaks (11-4, 9-1) in Section 1. Zola also had two RBIs.

■ In Freeport's doubleheader sweep of host Shady Side Academy (6-11, 4-10), Morgan McCarthy of Freeport (10-3, 10-3) went 5 for 6 with five home runs, eight RBIs and six runs scored.

Tennis

■ Keron Jones became the first Perry player in at least 25 years to win the City League boys title with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory against Carrick's Tyler Pashel.
