High school highlights: Elizabeth Forward surges to claim OT win

The Elizabeth Forward boys basketball team used a late rally Friday night to pick up an impressive win.

JaQuan Davidson scored 22 points and Class AAA No. 3 Elizabeth Forward overcame a double-digit fourth-quarter deficit to defeat visiting Steel Valley, 69-64, in overtime in Section 4.

Steel Valley (3-1, 0-1) held a 14-point lead early in the fourth, but Elizabeth Forward (6-0, 1-0) rallied to force overtime after Jasano Brooks made two free throws with 30 seconds left.

The Warriors outscored Steel Valley, 9-4, in overtime.

Ajan Smith led the Ironmen with 16 points.

Other top boys games

■ Ryan Luther scored 27 of his 33 points in the first half and Class AAAA No. 2 Hampton (4-0, 1-0) rolled to a 96-40 win against visiting North Hills (3-2, 0-1) in Section 3. The Talbots scored 66 points in the first half.

■ Sean Whalen had 19 points and 11 rebounds for host Central Catholic (3-1, 1-0) in a 59-51 win against Franklin Regional (3-2, 0-1) in Class AAAA Section 2. Central Catholic outscored Franklin Regional, 21-8, in the fourth quarter.

■ Joey Mascaro scored 15 points and R.J. Pfeuffer had 14 in leading host Bethel Park (4-0, 1-0) to a 60-49 triumph against Canon-McMillan (1-2, 0-1) in Class AAAA Section 4.

■ Kason Harrell's 19 points propelled host Hempfield (2-1, 1-0) to a 58-49 win against Norwin (2-3, 0-1) in Class AAAA Section 1. Hempfield was 14 of 14 from the free-throw line.

■ Tony Gates (17 points) led a group of five Central Valley players in double figures as the Class AAA No. 1 Warriors (4-0, 1-0) defeated visiting West Allegheny (3-1, 0-1), 87-55, in Section 2.

■ Matt McKinney scored 26 points and connected on seven of Neshannock's 12 3-pointers as the Class AA No. 5 Lancers (3-1, 1-0) earned a 91-55 win against visiting Riverside (1-3, 0-1) in Section 2.

■ Nick Miller's 31 points helped Class A No. 5 Western Beaver (4-0) remain undefeated after a 72-54 non-section win against visiting Deer Lakes (1-2). Western Beaver's Cody Acon added 14 points and 16 rebounds.


■ Fox Chapel's Matt D'Amico scored his 1,000th career point in helping the Class AAAA No. 3 Foxes (4-0, 1-0) topple visiting McKeesport (2-2, 0-1), 63-51, in Section 2. D'Amico scored 21 points in the game and has 1,020 in his career.

■ Victor Gianotta earned his 300th career coaching win after guiding Seneca Valley (3-1, 1-0) to a 64-33 victory against Shaler (1-3, 0-1) in Class AAAA Section 3. Zach Snyder led Seneca Valley with 20 points.

Late heroics

■ Ty Cook knocked down a 3-pointer with 2.5 seconds left to give South Allegheny (3-2, 1-0) a 49-47 win at Jeannette (2-2, 0-1) in Class AA Section 3. Cook finished with a game-high 19 points.

Stars of the night

■ Mike Simmons made six 3-pointers and scored 27 of his 36 points in the second half as host Kiski Area (2-2, 1-0) defeated Latrobe (1-2, 0-1), 70-50, in Class AAAA Section 1. Kiski Area outscored Latrobe, 48-29, in the second half.

■ Ryan Wolf (31 points) eclipsed 30 points for the fourth game in a row, helping Class A No. 1 Vincentian (4-0) defeat visiting Trinity Christian (1-3), 91-60, in a non-section game.

■ Erin Mathias finished with 22 points and five blocks to help Class AAAA No. 5 Fox Chapel (3-1, 1-0) open Section 2 play with a 72-28 rout of visiting McKeesport (2-2, 0-1).

■ Taylor Duchon and Lauren Gilbert scored 12 points apiece to push Baldwin (3-1, 1-0) to a 56-38 win at Chartiers Valley (1-3, 0-1) in Class AAAA Section 4.

■ Seairra Barrett scored 26 points and Kiana Law added 22 for Central Valley (3-2) in a 68-36 non-section win at Riverside (1-3).

■ Natalie Myers had 16 points and 15 rebounds for Class AA No. 2 Burrell (4-0), which edged visiting Indiana (3-2), 36-32, in a non-section game.
