Scribbles At Auction

Monday, April 01, 2002

The detail at right is from the photo "Who Am I?" by Duane Michals, which is one of more than 100 photographs that will be auctioned Saturday at 10 a.m. at The Silver Eye Center for Photography.

This fabulous auction is held once every two years to benefit the center, and it's a rare chance for collectors and wannabes to bid on and purchase some of the finest photography dating back to its very beginning. Exhibition of the photos continues Wednesday through Friday. Admission to the auction (which includes Starbucks and Maria's Biscotti) is $20, and reservations are recommended.

Absentee bids are welcome live and by phone, fax or e-mail until noon Friday. You also can preview the photos on the Web site -- www.silvereye.org.

Photos by Paul Strand, Dr. Harold Edgerton, Ruth Bernhard, Clyde Hare, William Wegman, Nancy Burson, Olivia Parker, Lynn Johnson, Randy Olson, Aaronel de Roy Gruber, Graham Nash and many prominent Pittsburgh photographers including Pamela Bryan, Charlee Brodsky, Martin Prekop, Donald Robinson, Joe Seamans and the PG's Annie O'Neill, William Wade and Pulitzer-winning Martha Rial also will be included.

The Michals photo above is lot 89, dated 1994/2001, 20x16 inches and signed on the front.

It's estimated to fetch between $1,500 and $2,500. Michals, a native of McKeesport who lives in New York, is known for his handwritten text that goes with his photographs. For more information on the auction, call 412-431-1810. The Silver Eye Center is at 1015 East Carson St., South Side.
