Hard-Hitting Fun
It's brutal and bloody, but boy, is it popular. The third annual "Night at the Fights" to benefit the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf and the Neighborhood Academy in Bloomfield (a college-prep high school for inner city youths) had the best turnout yet, with 450 crowding into the Omni William Penn's ballroom for a ringside seat Thursday. The National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP), along with sponsors including Pittsburgh Brewing Company, presented the bash of five bouts. Prior to witnessing amateur boxers from the Iron City Pro Boxing league throwing some punches, hard-hitting supporters were entertained by a cocktail reception including a cigar bar and dinner. Hanging in for every round were event chair Sam DiCicco, Iron City's Joe Piccirilli, NAIOP president David Massaro, Leo Castagnari, Don and Cathy Rhoten, Ronnie Bryant, Joe Massaro III, former Steeler Louis Lipps, Steeler Charlie Batch, Valerie Wilden, Ray Marano and Dominic Bonanno.

Casino Night
Whether your chips were on red or black, it was "A Bet You Can't Lose." And that's how guests attacked the gaming tables Friday night for the Allegheny Valley School benefit at the Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel. The school provides programs and facilities for mentally retarded individuals. Ace of hearts Myron Cope, whose son was born with brain damage and has lived at the school for 17 years, acted as honorary chair, greeting and meeting along with board chair Parie Duggan (with John) and event chair Courtney Borntraeger (with Tim). Food stations and plenty of passed hors d'oeuvres sustained strength for the live auction featuring a beach and ski vacation. Among those giving gambling a good name were the school's CEO Regis Camp with Cindy, Peggy McKnight, Bonnie and Dick Anton, Henry and Sandy Mordoh, Sarah Williams, emcee Sally Wiggin with Andy Smith, Dave and Margie Damico, Jim and Mardi Royston, Susan and Mike Boyle, Tricia and Bill Kassling, J.R. Philp, Bill and Gayle Simpson and state Rep. John Pippy with Kathy.

Dollars & (non) Cents
National City chairman, president and CEO Tom Golonski was the topic Wednesday when the 23rd Annual Corporate Roast to Benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh was held at the Omni William Penn. Some prominent financial leaders gathered for the opportunity of a lifetime, taking good-natured jabs at Golonski under the leadership of head teller Jim Roddey. David Hunter (chairman, Hunter Associates), Marty McGuinn (chairman and CEO of Mellon), Chris Donahue (president and CEO of Federated Investors) and Steve Steinour (chairman and CEO of Citizens Bank of Pennsylvania) cooked Golonski in short order, helping to raise funds so that children can continue to be matched with caring adult mentors. Laughing all the way to the bank were Ellen Golonski, Big Brothers executive director Wally Jenkins with Laura, Ann McGuinn, Barbara Baker, Janet Palumbo, Bill and Linda Roemer, Elisabeth Leach, Suzy and Jim Broadhurst, Tom and Jamee Todd and Edna Scarpaci.
