What a difference a year makes! Cold and rain dampened the crowd at Family House Polo last year, but Saturday's picture-perfect weather more than made up for such bad luck. The 30th anniversary of this popular event celebrated a new sponsor in Fifth Third Bank, a new Family House director in Bob Howard and a new "Sip, Savor & Shop" tent. Elaborate tailgate spreads, many of them tented, abounded. The Hanna family of Howard Hanna Real Estate Services and the Cochrans of #1 Cochran are the team sponsors and boast great tailgates, but there was stiff competition from many others at Hartwood Acres.
A vintage car display, children's activities and the halftime stomping of the divets kept the 2,000 guests entertained when they weren't riveted to the match between the Potomac and Virginia International polo clubs. Cheering them on were polo chair Helen Wylie, board chair Glen Feinberg, David Lovejoy, Tim McVay and David Bush, new U.S. Steel CEO Mario Longhi with Maria Helena, Brigetta Hannah, Ruthann Omer, Christine Waller, David and Julie Russo, Rick and Vera Purcell, Dottie and John Bechtol and so many others, all helping to raise $175,000 for the "home away from home" that Family House provides for patients and families undergoing medical treatment in Pittsburgh.
