While sipping cocktails and enjoying spectacular views of Downtown and PNC Park, guests celebrated the summer solstice Thursday during "Here Comes the Sun," a benefit for the Denis Theatre Foundation. The event chaired by Nadine Bognar and Joe Smith was held at Reed Smith's headquarters, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, a spacious outdoor terrace and a remarkable Andy Warhol portrait of Uncle Sam.
The foundation has raised more than $2 million toward its goal of renovating the Denis, which opened in 1938 and closed in 2004. Next year, the foundation plans to open the first of three screens at the shuttered Mt. Lebanon theater. The total fundraising goal is $4.5 million. With Jim Krenn as emcee, the crowd included board members Elaine Wertheim, Jen Smokelin and the foundation's co-interim directors Jane Delano and Penny Richichi. Honorees were the creative team of "The Chief," the one-man show in which actor Tom Atkins plays the inimitable Art Rooney Sr. Besides Mr. Atkins, the team included writers Gene Collier and Rob Zellers, Ted Pappas, who directed the popular production, Steve Parys, director of the film adaptation, and Thomas Chaffee, the film's managing partner.
