African Diary

Kibondo, Tanzania

Made my first trip to the [Tanzania-Burundi] border to see new arrivals. Many were from the southern provinces of Burundi, but some had walked from central Burundi. Most were peasants and they reported harassment from Tutsi soldiers. We transported two mothers with very ill children to the hospital. One had severe dehydration, the other symptoms of malaria. It was the first time they had been in a car! There were between 400 and 500 new arrivals just today. Sometimes local Tanzanians show up at the border station looking to make trades with the new arrivals. Some try to steal what little the refugees brought with them.
