Detours, other travel tips for Boulevard of the Allies
Sunday, May 20, 2001
PennDOT will post signs providing motorists with routes to bypass the closed outbound lanes of the Boulevard of the Allies between the Liberty Bridge and South Oakland starting Tuesday.
In addition to shutting down a key route from Downtown to Oakland, the reconstruction work will seal off the boulevard entry ramp to the Parkway East and close one of two inbound lanes from South Oakland through the Bluff.
Several unofficial detours and alternate routes may work better than official detours for some motorists.
Downtown-Oakland -- Forbes and Fifth avenues are one-way streets paralleling the Boulevard. During certain times of the day, and during the summer vacation season, Forbes and Fifth may be good choices.
From Route 51 -- If you live south of Route 88, use Lebanon Church Road or Streets Run Road. Take the so-called "back-door" route to Oakland via Route 837 through the South Side or via Route 885 through Hazelwood.
Downtown-Parkway East -- Use the Wood Street entrance ramp to the Parkway East to avoid congestion at the Grant Street entrance ramp.
To head east from points north and west -- To avoid most of Downtown, use I-279 across the North Shore and the Fort Duquesne Bridge. Take the I-376 exit lane at Point State Park to Fort Pitt Boulevard eastbound and Parkway East. (The signs say Monroeville.) Because trucks over 8 tons cannot use Fort Pitt Boulevard eastbound, drivers have to continue through the Fort Pitt Tunnel and make a U-turn at Banksville interchange, thereby circling back to the Parkway East.
Two things not to do
