You can take a plunge on the implosion raffle until Jan. 29

Thursday, January 18, 2001

The person who pushes the plunger to blow up Three Rivers Stadium will be selected in a raffle drawing at 3 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Carnegie Science Center, North Shore.

More than 9,000 of the $10 raffle tickets benefiting the science center have been sold, according to center officials. The winner is currently slated to set off the implosion Feb. 4 from a "safety zone" somewhere between PNC Park and the doomed stadium.

Raffle ticket sales, which began last month at the Steelers' final game in Three Rivers, will continue at various locations for 13 days. Tickets sold at outlying locations such as Kaufmann's will cease Jan. 26, but there will be a one-day blitz at two Downtown locations on Jan 29: USX Tower on Grant Street and Dominion Tower (formerly CNG Tower) on Liberty Avenue. Only cash, checks or money orders are accepted..

Tickets also will be sold at the science center until 2 p.m. the day of the drawing. Money orders or personal checks made out to Carnegie Institute may be mailed to the center for raffle tickets, but must be postmarked by Jan. 24. The address is Implosion Raffle, Carnegie Science Center, One Allegheny Ave., Pittsburgh 15212.

The winner will also receive a round-trip ticket for two to the Bahamas, courtesy of AirTran Airways, five days in a Marriott and a year of beer from Pittsburgh Brewing Co.
