The biggest or the smallest? Monday, August 28, 2000
The Small Schools Coalition recommends a population of 350 or fewer students in elementary schools, and 500 or fewer in middle and high schools. Although the recommended sizes may vary, small-school advocates including the coalition say that children learn better in less-populated schools. In Allegheny County, 52 of the system's 224 suburban schools would be considered "small" under the coalition's definition. Following are the 10 smallest and 10 largest schools in the county.
