The parents' statement

Friday, May 05, 2000

Here is the statement issued yesterday by Andrejs and Inese Baumhammers, the parents of Richard S. Baumhammers.

"On behalf of our family, we wish to make this statement regarding the terrible events involving our son, Richard, that took place on Friday, April 28, 2000.

"This tragic episode could only be described as a nightmare. While we love our son and have tried throughout the years to provide him the love, support and appropriate medical treatment to deal with his psychiatric problems, we are as shocked, dismayed and troubled by this episode as any member of our community. Our heartfelt concern and prayers go out to the families of all those victimized by the events of last Friday. We are all God's children and we condemn bigotry in any form. We count as our friends many who are diverse in ethnicity or race. We can only hope that out of this tragedy will come a greater sense of the importance of unity among all people, regardless of race, color or creed. We pray for healing not only within the families of the victims but across our entire nation as we deal with such senseless violence.

"This statement is intended to be our final statement on this tragic event and we ask to be granted privacy to mourn the trauma within our family and to pray for the victims and our community."
