Storytelling bus would be named for shooting victim

Tuesday, March 07, 2000

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Joseph Healy, killed by a gunman last week in Wilkinsburg, was a master storyteller who delighted thousands of children with tales that reinforced the attributes of courage, honesty, hope, respect, justice, loyalty and love.

Because he told many of those stories while riding on a rented bus filled with school children 5 to 10 years old, the Heartwood Institute, which conducted the storytelling sessions in conjunction with the Greble Foundation and BridgeBuilders, wants to buy a bus to name after him so the program can continue.

Penny Levy and Barbara Clark, the East Hills Elementary School teachers who created the storytelling program, said the lanky, white-bearded Healy was the first storyteller they signed up.

"The kids called him 'Mister Joe' and felt very close to him," Levy said. "They can't believe he's gone and neither can we."

Donations may be sent to The Heartwood Bus Inc., c/o Michael Lowenstein, Reed Smith Shaw & McClay, 435 Sixth Ave., Pittsburgh 15219. For more information, call 412-688-8570 or 412-247-7899.
