Groups, individual honored for environmental work

A group that did environmental work on a polluted stream through a slag pile, a student landscaping program at the National Aviary and a Clarion County conservationist are among this year's Three Rivers Environmental Award winners.
Sponsored by the Pennsylvania Environmental Council and Duquesne Light Co., this is the fifth year for the awards. Winners were announced last night during a dinner at the Pittsburgh Hilton and Towers, Downtown.
The Nine Mile Run Greenway Project of the Studio for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon University was the winner of the Higher Education award. Through a series of public outreach efforts, the project has explored environmental issues associated with reclaiming Nine Mile Run and the slag piles between Frick Park and the Monongahela River.
The Junior Landscaping Program of the National Aviary and Cities in Schools was recognized in the Primary or Secondary Education category for its hands-on lessons in ecology and horticulture for urban students.
Bernard J. Spozio, a district conservationist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, won the award in the Government category by pioneering acid mine drainage treatments to improve river water quality.
The Jennings Environmental Education Center in Slippery Rock, Butler County, won the award in the category for Community or Continuing Education.
The Franklin Brine Treatment Corp. in Franklin, Venango County, won in the Environmental Products or Services category for its specialized treatment facility that annually cleans more than 20 million gallons of industrial waste water.
The Business Award for Environmental Stewardship was won by USX's Clairton Works, which combined innovations to is coke oven doors and employee education to help reduce emissions, and National Forge Co. in Irvine, Warren County, which has re-used more than 100,000 gallons of oil and lubricants during the past three years.
The Mill Creek Coalition of Clarion and Jefferson Counties was the winner in the Environmental Organizations category. The coalition of 12 environmental groups has installed passive treatment systems to reduce the iron and acid content of Mill Creek.
Winner of the Community and Social Organizations award was Neville-Green, an organization that works with businesses to promote environmental conservation and protection on Neville Island.
The Southwest Pennsylvania Ozone Action Partnership won the award for Public Awareness. The group is publicizing the dangers of ground-level ozone.
CDS Associates Inc. of Coraopolis won the Planning Design and Development award for its innovative work in acid mine treatment.
The awards include cash prizes of $1,000, which are donated to the nonprofit environmental organizations designated by each winner.
