For the first time in years, the sound of music filled Downtown.
On Tuesday, Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald flipped the switch on the courthouse's 47-year-old chimes system, which was installed in the century-old building's tower in the 1960s but have fallen silent in recent years. Repaired in an ongoing restoration of the historic building, the chimes will ring every hour between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. starting next week.
And at noon, the chimes will play a different song. You should be able to hear them: Electronic amplification gives the 183 chimes the ringing power of a 50-ton array.
