After a one-week hiatus, swimming at all 12 YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh day camps with pools has resumed, according to a press release.
There are 22 day camp locations operated by the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh but only 12 have pools on location. The remaining 10 schedule occasional field trips to swimming locations and will not receive clearance until the next scheduled trip.
Swimming was suspended at all 22 summer day camps on July 9 after a 6-year-old enrolled in a YMCA camp at Carson Middle School nearly drowned in June on a field trip to the Baierl Family YMCA.
The Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare told the YMCA to shut down the program at Carson Middle School after finding that some counselors were not able to correctly or quickly identify their assigned counselors. The program was in violation of requirements outlined by the state department.
After the department's request, the YMCA decided it was necessary to review the supervision at all of its day camps before allowing children to swim again.
Officials traveled to the 12 camp sites to conduct internal audits, which included randomly asking counselors to identify and locate their campers. Until officials approved of the day camp's supervision practices, swimming was not allowed at that site.
