Flash flood watch announced for Pittsburgh region

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for the southwestern corner of Pennsylvania.

Scattered showers are expected to hit in the afternoon followed by widespread and severe thunderstorms in the Pittsburgh region overnight.

The watch was announced for the Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington, Westmoreland and Beaver counties, as well as West Virginia's northern panhandle.

As much as 4 inches of rain and hail measuring an inch in diameter could result from the looming thunderstorms, according to the weather service.

The watch is scheduled to end late Wednesday afternoon.
