Anthrocon, the organization for people who dress up as cartoon animals, will try to set a record for the largest "fursuit" parade during its annual convention in Pittsburgh.
The parade will be held about 2 p.m. Saturday inside the David L Lawrence Convention Center. More than 1,100 so-called furries in head-to-toe costume are expected to participate after posing for a documentary photograph for a Guinness World Record.
Only about 20 percent of the group's members wear costumes, while others are artists, animators, costume designers and fans of cartoon animals, the organization said in a press release today.
About 5,500 people are expected to attend the July 4-7 convention. Anthrocon has met each year in Pittsburgh since 2006. VisitPittsburgh estimates that it has brought more than $25 million in direct spending to the region. The convention has raised more than $140,000 for animal-related charities.
