Air quality alert in effect for Pittsburgh region on Sunday

The state Department of Environmental Protection has issued a code orange air quality alert for much of the district today.

The alert means that pollution could reach unhealthy levels for those in sensitive groups, including the elderly, children and people suffering from asthma, heart disease or lung disease. It recommended avoiding strenuous activity or exercising outdoors.

The alert is in effect for Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Washington and western Westmoreland and Fayette counties.
