PennDOT has announced weekend restrictions in both directions on Route 28 in the construction zone on the North Side and in Millvale.
Outbound traffic faces stoppages of up to 15 minutes from 5 a.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Sunday, except for a two-hour period after the Pirates game, which begins at 4:35 p.m.
The stoppages will be frequent and are expected to cause significant delays, and PennDOT is urging drivers to use alternate routes, spokesman Steve Cowan said.
Inbound traffic will be restricted to a single lane, with the left lane closed, starting at the approach to the 40th Street Bridge during the same hours.
The same restrictions will be in effect overnight in both directions starting at 8 p.m. Monday through Sunday, June 23, and ending by 5 a.m. daily. Crews will be setting the remaining beams for the 31st Street Bridge.
The suggested alternate route for outbound traffic coming from Interstate 279, Route 65 and General Robinson Street is to use the 16th Street Bridge to a left on Liberty Avenue, left on 31st Street, right on Penn Avenue-Butler Street and left to the 40th Street Bridge.
Interstate 579-Crosstown Boulevard traffic is urged to use the Seventh Avenue exit to a right on Liberty Avenue to join the alternate route.
