West Penn Burn Center's summer camp for children - an annual event in its 27th year - kicked off this weekend, with today's events to include visits from local firefighters at Camp Kon-O-Kwee near Zelienople.

The event is held through Wednesday.

Stephanie Waite, a spokesman for West Penn-Allegheny Health System, said burn camp activities are designed to encourage the children to "take positive risks and boost their self-esteem in an environment that is safe and supportive."

This year, 28 children will be participating.
