Indiana County township officials steal, sell scrap metal, equipment, state police say

Four officials stole more than $14,000 in scrap metal and equipment from the Indiana County township they serve, state police said.

Two Green Township elected supervisors and two employees sold a dump truck, belt loader, metal bridge pieces and other metal to a scrap yard for cash and divided the profits, state police said in a press release today.

Seven salvage slips, dated from March 16, 2012, through April 5, 2013, totaled $14,189.31, state police said.

Supervisors James Crawford, 73 of Clymer; and Allen Shirley, 61, of Commodore; and township employees Dale Laney, 60, of Northern Cambria; and Gary Putt, 60, of Commodore were each charged with two felony theft counts.
