The National Weather Service recorded an unofficial low temperature of 19 degrees at Pittsburgh International Airport at 6 a.m. today, which broke the record low of 20 degrees for this date set in 1954.

Meteorologist Lee Hendricks confirmed the reading, which will become official after the weather service reviews computer records later this morning.

The big chill is supposed to ease later today, with a forecast high of 56 under sunny skies this afternoon, and similar welcome warmth in the days ahead.
