An employee of an independent company died Monday on property owned by Consol Energy near its Loveridge Preparation Plant in Marion County, W.Va.
The worker was fatally injured when a small core drilling rig he was operating rolled over, Consol media relations director Lynn Seay wrote in an email this afternoon.
Federal and West Virginia agencies, as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, were on-site today investigating the death, she wrote. She did not specify other agencies.
"Consol Energy will provide updated information related to the investigation as it becomes available," she wrote.
The surface-drilling contractor informed Consol officials of the death at 6:10 p.m. Monday, Ms. Seay wrote.
"Consol Energy granted Seitel, Inc. access to its property to conduct geophysical seismic testing, for which it had obtained the necessary permits.
"The independent testing was not associated with Consol Energy's active coal mining or gas operations," she wrote.
Ms. Seay said she could not confirm if the worker was employed by Seitel, Inc. A Seitel representative was not available for comment this evening.
