Last night as Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton engaged in a debate at Cleveland State University, not far from the shores of Lake Erie, another harbor town listened intently, hoping to find its political savior.

Empty storefronts dot Main Street, shuttered plants hug the low hills next to boarded houses, and the city's population has fallen from 30,000 to 20,000.
