CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- Jania Sims' jumper with 1:04 left in overtime gave No. 21 Pitt the lead for good and the Panthers held on to defeat Austin Peay, 76-75, yesterday at Dave Aaron Arena.
Sims, who finished with 12 points, scored the final three points in the extra period for Pitt (9-1), adding a free throw with 9.9 seconds left to give the Panthers a three-point advantage.
Ashley Herring missed a long 3-pointer for Austin Peay (3-8) and Meghan Bussabarger was fouled on the rebound with 1.4 seconds left.
Bussabarger made both free throws to cut the lead to one, but Pitt got the ball inbounds and ran out the clock.
The score was tied, 71-71, at the end of regulation and Pitt led, 33-31, at halftime
Brittaney Thomas led Pitt with 15 points.
Chelsea Cole finished with 19 rebounds and four points for the Panthers, including an offensive rebound and kickout to Sims for a tying 3-pointer.
Jasmine Rayner had 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Governors.
Rayner converted 5 of 7 field goals and 11 of 16 free throws. Herring added 15 points and six rebounds and Bussabarger 11 points and five rebounds.
The Panthers also got double-figure points from Pepper Wilson (14), Taneisha Harrison (13) and Shayla Scott (11).
Austin Peay made 26 of 38 free throws. Pitt was just 8 of 16 from the line.
Each team struggled with turnovers -- Pitt had 22 and Austin Peay 20.
The Governors missed all six of their field-goal attempts in the overtime, including one 3-pointer.
