ST. LOUIS -- The Pirates recalled right-hander Brandon Cumpton from Class AAA Indianapolis today, one day after their starting pitcher lasted only three innings and they used five relievers.

The Pirates also designated right-hander James McDonald for assignment. McDonald was on the 60-day disabled list because of continued shoulder pain and had been rehabbing with Indianapolis.

McDonald, 28, has not pitched in the majors since April. He had a 5.76 ERA in six starts before shoulder pain sent him to the DL.

After a great first half of 2012, McDonald was never the same. He struggled down the stretch last season, eventually being relegated to the bullpen, and lost velocity this season.

The Pirates also activated outfielder Starling Marte from the 15-day disabled list today. Marte missed time because of a contusion and sprained ligament in his right hand. He will serve as a pinch-runner at first because he is still having trouble swinging the bat. "Brutal," he said regarding how it felt to swing the bat with two hands.
