ATLANTA -- The Pirates recalled right-handed reliever Jared Hughes and selected right-handed reliever Ryan Reid from Class AAA Indianapolis this afternoon to bolster a tired bullpen.
The Pirates needed relief help after the bullpen combined to pitch 10 shutout innings in a 5-4 victory against the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday at PNC Park. The team placed starting pitcher Jeanmar Gomez on the 15-day disabled list with a right forearm strain/inflammation and optioned outfielder Alex Presley to Indianapolis.
The team also placed minor league pitcher Phil Irwin on the 60-day disabled list, making room for Reid on the 40-man roster.
In 20 outings for Indianapolis season, Reid went 6-1 with an 0.52 ERA. The Pirates signed him as a minor league free agent this offseason, and Reid is yet to make his major league debut.
Hughes, who spent most of the 2012 season with the Pirates, has bounced between the minor and major leagues several times this season. He is 1-2 with a 4.61 ERA in 13 appearances with the Pirates this season and 1-0 with an 0.69 ERA in 11 appearances with Indianapolis.
Gomez sustained his injury Sunday after giving up four runs in the first inning against the Reds.
