The Pirates recalled right-handed reliever Duke Welker this morning to add bullpen depth.
Welker, 27, has yet to make his major league debut. He has thrived in the minor leagues after being converted from a starter to a late-innings reliever. The 6-foot-7 pitcher can throw as fast as 98 mph and went 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA for Class AAA Indianapolis. He faced 56 batters and allowed three hits for Indianapolis this season.
Hailing from Kirkland, Wash., Welker could make his major league debut today against his childhood team, the Seattle Mariners.
The Pirates optioned infielder Josh Harrison to make room on the 25-man roster.
The team also announced pitcher Jeanmar Gomez, who earned a win Tuesday night, will start Sunday against the New York Mets. His move from the bullpen to the rotation prompted a need for a relief pitcher.
