The Pirates recalled right-handed pitcher Phil Irwin this morning and made official their decision to have him start today's game against the Cincinnati Reds.
To make room on the 25-man roster, the Pirates optioned infielder Josh Harrison to Class AAA Indianapolis.
Irwin is making a spot start in place of Wandy Rodriguez, who left his last start early with tightness in his left hamstring. Rodriguez said he plans to make his next scheduled start April 19.
Selected out of the University of Mississippi in the 21st round of the 2009 draft, Irwin will make his major league debut at 1:35 p.m. today.
"He's a real steady young man," manager Clint Hurdle said. "Not too high, not too low."
The Pirates opted to play short one bench spot today in part because of how taxed the bullpen has been in recent outings. Closer Jason Grilli is unavailable after pitching in consecutive outings, and long reliever Justin Wilson is unavailable after throwing 40 pitches Saturday night. Setup man Mark Melancon might also be unavailable.
