CHICAGO -- The State College Spikes, the Pirates' short-season Class A affiliate, plan to sign a two-year player development contract with the St. Louis Cardinals, according to a source.
An announcement is expected later today. The Centre Daily Times reported the Spikes' affiliation switch.
The Spikes, a member of the New York-Penn League, have been affiliated with the Pirates since 2007. They were affiliated with the Cardinals from 1981, when the franchise was known as the Erie Cardinals, until 2006. The Pirates' two-year PDC expired after this season.
The move will force the Pirates to find a new short-season affiliate.
The Spikes finished 35-41 this season. Right-hander Luis Heredia, an 18-year-old international signee, served as the main attraction.
