CHICAGO--The Pirates' top two pitching prospects, Jameson Taillon and Stetson Allie, will begin the season in extended spring training, general manager Neal Huntington confirmed today, not low-Class A West Virginia as was previously anticipated.
Huntington said the move for both was "workload related." The organization wants the first and second round picks from the most recent draft to get used to a five-day rotation and monitor their innings and pitches as closely as possible.
They will, however, be promoted to West Virginia at some point this summer.
Both players had prolonged contract negotiations last summer after being drafted and that limited their work, thus, there was a trickle down that drifted into this season, Huntington said.
