Film Notes: Ambridge celebrating town's role in 'One for the Money'
Friday, January 27, 2012

Ambridge will roll out the red carpet, literally, for sold-out screenings of "One for the Money" tonight and Saturday. An empty storefront on Merchant Street, which doubled as a location during 2010 filming, will be part of a movable film feast.

Ambridge Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the premieres of the Katherine Heigl action comedy, and tickets, $20, are long gone.

Ms. Heigl plays Stephanie Plum, a onetime lingerie saleswoman who lands a job at her cousin's bail-bond business. The movie is based on the first of Janet Evanovich's 18 novels and also stars Debbie Reynolds, Jason O'Mara, Daniel Sunjata, John Leguizamo and Sherri Shepherd.

After a reception in the storefront, courtesy of owner Marleen Verigood, guests will head to the Ambridge Family Theater, and an after-party will be held at Rook's East Side Saloon.

Jeremy Angus, executive director of the chamber, said the storefront is one of the nicest in the town and portrayed a New Jersey bail-bonds office in the movie. All of the Western Pennsylvania locations sub for Trenton, N.J.

"I know nothing about the story but, from what the 2,000 women who have called me, that's where she goes to get her first job. ... That building and the theater itself and all the stores in that area were blocked off, more like an outdoor market."

Mr. Angus had a front-row seat for filming. "Our office is right on Merchant Street. We were right in the middle of the filming. They were kind of filming it down that end of town, at the other end of town, which was kind of neat.

"So every time I'd go to the bank or I'd head down to the other end of the street, I'd literally walk right through it. The guys were wonderful to us. ... They were absolutely tremendous."

Some moviegoers plan to dress like Stephanie Plum or other characters from the film while gowns may grace the red carpet, too. The New York premiere was earlier this week, and Ms. Evanovich blogged her favorite things on her website:

"Favorite thing #1: Walking the red carpet. I felt like a movie star!

"Favorite thing #2: Jason O'Mara is twice as hot in person as he is on the screen.

"Favorite thing #3: Hanging out with Sherri Shepherd and her fans.

"Favorite thing #4: Getting free popcorn to snack on while I watched the movie.

"Favorite thing #5: Meeting John Leguizamo. He plays Jimmy Alpha in the movie. An amazing actor and all around great guy."

She also recounted how she had an allergic reaction to the glue on her false eyelashes -- "my eyes didn't swell up and break out until after I saw the movie" -- and how she was afraid to drink anything, lest she would have to shimmy out of her Spanx and yank them back up.

Julie Anne Robinson directed the movie, opening in theaters everywhere today but not previewed for critics. The production also filmed in Braddock, McKees Rocks, East Liberty, the Strip District, North Side, Friendship, West Mifflin, Shadyside, Wilkinsburg and Kittanning, Armstrong County, according to the Pittsburgh Film Office.

In brief
