9-year-old gets room of her own
Thursday, December 22, 2011

When the Fagan family asked their Allegheny Center Alliance Church community about reputable contractors for an addition to their home, they didn't know their fellow parishioners would end up serving as the builders.

David and Jennifer Fagan's 9-year-old daughter, Sierra, was born with multiple birth defects that have left her with significant physical and mental disabilities. The medical equipment and special furniture to accommodate Sierra's needs fit only in the family's dining room, which has longtime served as her makeshift room.

As the family grew, the Fagans decided it was time to build an addition onto their South Hills home.

Upon learning of the family's need, the church community reached out to Hosanna Industries, which helps needy families complete housing rehabilitation projects. Planners with the Rochester, Pa.-based nonprofit expedited the process to complete Sierra's room in time for Christmas. All the supplies were donated.

Volunteers from the church, Hosanna Industries and the Mt. Lebanon fire department, where Mr. Fagan volunteers, unveiled the room during a Wednesday afternoon dedication.

Mr. Fagan, who is celebrating more good new this month after being named Mt. Lebanon's volunteer firefighter of the year, said the support was so tremendous, they had to turn away volunteers.

"They're doing it for us, and they're thanking us," he said. "It just blows my mind."

The builders broke ground Dec. 10, removing the family's existing porch and digging and pouring the footer. The following Monday, they began to lay block, then framed exterior walls and installed floors, windows, siding and roofing through the end of the week. The following week, volunteers painted and installed carpet and vinyl floors. Heating and air conditioning units were installed, as well as a closet and adjacent bathroom.

Ms. Fagan said the room has an outdoor theme -- light blue with clouds.

Sierra seemed excited during the building phase, the family said, although she acted hesitant at first, unsure what was in store.

The family said since they began considering building an addition, everything has fallen into place.

"It just seems like every step of the way, God's hand has been on this," Ms. Fagan said.
