Rivers Casino cashes donations to North Side, Hill
Wednesday, August 10, 2011

The Northside Leadership Conference and the Hill District won big Tuesday at Rivers Casino without wagering a dime.

Both got $1 million from the casino for the second straight year. The grants are part of a three-year, $3 million commitment made to the leadership conference and the Hill by the casino and its former owner Don Barden in the bid for the Pittsburgh slots license.

Leadership conference officials are using the money to supplement residential and neighborhood commercial district improvement projects on the North Side. Last year's grant supported the development of 42 houses, renovations to seven commercial buildings, and three streetscape improvements totaling $11.5 million.

The money for the Hill District is being held by the Poise Foundation while community leaders determine how it should be spent.
