Steelers jams 2011
Thursday, February 03, 2011

"Black and Yellow" was never meant to be a Steelers fight song and if it was, it wouldn't have more than 30 million YouTube hits and sit in the top 5 on Billboard. But Wiz Khalifa's breakout song has been the rallying cry for the Steelers' 2011 Super Bowl campaign.

It's pretty hard to compete with, but that didn't stop dozens of artists and singers from recording new Steelers songs this year. A lot of them are quick, cheesy parodies sung over karaoke tracks, but some are more ambitious.

Here are the best of the bunch:

• Gene the Werewolf, "Steelers Polka 2011": The glammy bar-rock band updates a classic with a dose of Red Bull and vocal that sounds like your Aunt Gertrude got drunk.

• "Steel Defense, "In Acchord": This well-executed parody of "Bad Romance" from this 7-member a cappella ensemble is viral, up over 640,000 YouTube hits.

• Jackson, "Black and Gold": Freddy Jackson, who goes by Jackson, delivers this sly, hypnotic hip-hop song that boasts "we fry teams like Southern chicken."

• East Coast Turnaround, "Knockin' on Seven's Door": Jeanette band that won the Pittsburgh Hard Rock battle of the bands in March sounds like Skynyrd doing Dylan repping the Steelers.

The Pop Rocks, "Go Steelers": Teen-group The Pop Rocks, which popped up during the last Super Bowl turning Pat Benatar's "Heartbreakers" into a Steelers fight song, dips into the classic-rock playlist again, with a black-and-gold take on Blue Oyster Cult's "Godzilla."

• Kelle Maize, "City of Champions": This one might be a little harder to sing along to. The female rapper saluted the city and the teams with a staccato techno beat and a scenic video tour.

• Roger Wood Band, "Here We Go": The old funk staple is back, with a similarly flat vocal, this time name-checking some newer Steelers. But does Hampton really rhyme with Timmons?

• "Puhlahmahlu 2010," Mr. Devious: Manamana...it's Puhlahmahlu. Funny, grumpy update on the original Muppets parody.

• "Rise Up Steeler Nation," NewLanders: Folk group with historical bent adds some steel and grit to the wall-of-sound anthem.

• "Black And Gold," Mike Kissinger: You've heard the battle about black-and-gold versus black-and-yellow. Here it is in song -- hip-hop/funk style: "I don't really care what you been told, but it's black and gold, black and gold, black and gold ..."

• "The Dropkick Steeler," The Boiled Leathermen: Shout out to Dropkick Murphys-style gang-vocal punk rock.

• "The Italian Steelers Fight Song," The Cavaliers Italian Band: Mama mia, this is the modern-day answer to Franco's Italian Army.

• "Official Black & Yellow (Steelers Remix)," The1NateB: Remixes of Khalifa's hit are guaranteed big YouTube hits. This one is up over 50,000.

• "What You Know 'Bout the Black and Gold," Midi Gritty Boyz: Heavy club banger samples NFL Films and "Sunday Night Football" music with cool turntable scratching and gangsta rap vocals.

"Let's Go Black and Gold," John Evans (Sinysteria): What it might sound like if Black Sabbath did a Steelers song.

The songs can be found on YouTube and the bands' websites or myspace pages.
