The Pirates today agreed to terms with right-handed relief pitcher Joel Hanrahan on a contract for the 2011 season, avoiding salary arbitration.
The deal is worth $1.4 million.
Hanrahan, 29, went 4-1 with six saves and a 3.62 ERA in a career-high 72 appearances with the Pirates last season. He also struck out a career-high 100 batters while working 69.2 innings.
Hanrahan ranked fourth among all Major League relief pitchers in strikeouts in 2010 and became the first Pirates reliever with at least 100 K's in a season since Don Robinson whiffed 101 in 1984.
Also today, the organization agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Jose Veras and catcher Wyatt Toregas on minor league contracts with invitations to spring training as non-roster players.
Veras, 30, went 3-3 with a 3.75 ERA in 48 relief appearances with Florida last season. Veras made his Major League debut with the Yankees in 2006.
Toregas, 28, was a member of Cleveland's 40-man roster in spring training last year and spent the 2010 season in the Indians' farm system. He made his big league debut with the Indians in 2009 and made 19 appearances behind the plate that season.
The Pirates have also invited the following five players to Major League spring training -- catcher Tony Sanchez, infielders Chase d'Arnaud and Brian Friday and outfielders Eric Fryer and Andrew Lambo.
The Pirates now have 22 non-roster players scheduled to attend spring training (10 pitchers, 3 catchers, 6 infielders and 3 outfielders).
