Woman who threw bike during G-20 accepts probation
Friday, October 08, 2010

A Mount Washington woman accused of throwing her bicycle at a police officer during the G-20 Summit entered an Allegheny County court program this morning that will allow all the charges against her to be dismissed provided she successfully completes a nine-month period of probation.

Lauren Wasson, 24, originally was charged with aggravated assault and obstructing highways. The most serious count, aggravated assault, was reduced to misdemeanor simple assault by prosecutors in August so Ms. Wasson could enter the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program today.

Ms. Wasson was arrested Sept. 24, 2009, in Oakland for allegedly throwing her bicycle at Officer Shawn Dady.

Her attorney, Glen S. Downey, his client had no intention of even being part of the G-20 protests and instead got caught up in one on Bigelow Boulevard while she and a friend were trying to bike home.

The woman was at the end of a line of people officers were trying to move between Fifth and Forbes avenues.

At one point, Ms. Wasson was struck by the end of an officer's nightstick in the small of her back, Mr. Downey said. He believes she reacted to the pain, and threw her bike aside so she could move faster.

Instead, the bike hit Officer Dady, and she was arrested.

To complete the program, which will expunge Ms. Wasson's criminal record, she must serve nine months probation and complete 50 hours of community service.
