It is time for Keystone Oaks and Burrell to take on someone their own size.
The Class AA football programs have been going out of their way and out of their classification to take on bigger programs and now they will meet tomorrow night at Dormont Stadium in the final tuneup for each team before conference play begins the following week.
Both teams own impressive opening week wins against Class AAA teams.
The Golden Eagles made easy work of Ambridge on the road, winning 34-7 while Burrell dominated neighboring rival Valley at home, 45-13.
With nine-game conference schedules the past two seasons, non-conference games were not possible in Class AA, but with Burrell playing in the eight-team Allegheny Conference and Keystone Oaks playing in the eight-team Century Conference, their schedules allows for non-conference games in the first two weeks of September.
Despite scrimmaging against Class AAA teams in the preseason (Keystone Oaks scrimmaged Moon and Trinity and Burrell scrimmaged Knoch and Highlands) and then opening the regular season against bigger schools, this matchup could be the biggest test each team has faced thus far.
The teams are also familiar with each other.
Keystone Oaks shut out Burrell, 27-0, last season at Dormont Stadium in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs.
Both coaches watched the tape of that game this past weekend.
"That is one of those tapes you burn right away," Burrell coach Tom Henderson said.
Henderson was not talking about burning the tape as in making copies of it but rather removing it permanently from his video library.
However painful it was to watch the tape, Henderson did and relived the playoff shutout loss.
"They put a whipping on us and they would be crazy to do anything other than what they did [strategy-wise]," Henderson said.
What Keystone Oaks did was dominate the line of scrimmage and run all over Burrell.
The Golden Eagles outrushed Burrell, 282-46, and held the Buccaneers to six first downs. Matt McCann ran for 229 yards on 17 carries including touchdown runs of 4, 70 and 93 yards in that game.
Burrell can expect another heavy dose of McCann, who thrived in Keystone Oaks' new-look offense in the season opener. Going with a wildcat package about 70-percent of the time, McCann rushed for 150 yards in the win against Ambridge.
The Keystone Oaks wildcat package is especially dangerous with McCann and partner Jordan Maddox both in the backfield. The two combined for more than 3,000 yards last season and 46 touchdowns.
In the wildcat McCann has been taking most of the direct snaps with Maddox either lining up next to him or in a slot position with the option of going in motion.
"We have been tinkering with it," Keystone Oaks coach Nick Kamberis said. "It is a good chunk of our offense."
Burrell junior quarterback Zack Middleby accounted for more than a good chunk of his team's offense Friday night. He passed for 247 yards and rushed for 147 along with accounting for five touchdowns, three rushing and two passing.
"He had a huge game," Henderson said. "He is reaping the benefits of what he put into it in the offseason."
The goal for both teams is to come out of week two at 2-0 but both also want to take advantage of another regular-season game that does not have direct playoff implications.
"It is definitely nice to take a little bit of that pressure off," Kamberis said. "There is a lot less stress on the head coach, you don't have to be perfect right out of the gate, but this is another game that we obviously want to win."
Who: Burrell (1-0) at Keystone Oaks (1-0).
When: 7 p.m. Friday.
Where: Dormont Stadium.
The skinney: Both teams opened the season with impressive wins and tangle in a non-conference contest.
