Gateway to the Wilds: The Nature Inn and Bald Eagle State Park

The Nature Inn and Bald Eagle State Park are located near the southern edge of the state's rural northcentral wilderness, branded in 2003 by the state and tourism industry as the Pennsylvania Wilds.

1 million acres -- Size of the region.

1.8 million -- Estimated increase in overnight visitors, 2003-2007.

6.3 percent -- Increase in visitor spending in the Wilds from 2003-2007.

$13 million -- Grants awarded to community projects since 2003.

$126 million -- Invested by DCNR in Pennsylvania Wilds destination facilities and trail upgrades, restrooms, showers and signs in parks and state forests.

What to do

Far more than fits in this space, but here's a brief sampler:

Artisan Trail -- Driving route linking galleries and displays featuring the works of northcentral Pennsylvanian artists.

Elk Visitor Center -- Benezette. New interpretive facility focusing on the state's wild elk herd.

Red Hill -- North Bend. 350-million-year-old fish fossils.

Woolrich -- Lock Haven. The original store of the Woolrich Company, open since 1830, and museum.

Cranberry Swamp Natural Area -- Renovo. 144-acre mountain bog.

Big Rock Vista -- Renovo. Sandstone outcrops as big as houses.

Allegheny National Forest -- Pennsylvania's only national forest includes rare stands of old-growth forest.
