Mt. Lebanon overpowers Pine-Richland

Luke Hagy was one of the top sophomores in WPIAL Class AAAA last season. It didn't take long into his junior year to make an even bigger impression with some big plays.

Hagy scored on a 62-yard punt return and a 55-yard run in the first quarter and added a 42-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that gave Mt. Lebanon the lead for good in the Blue Devils' 34-22 victory against Pine-Richland Friday night in an intriguing season-opening non-conference game.

Hagy rushed for 205 yards on 20 carries, and Christian Orfanopoulas had a 10-yard touchdown reception and kicked four extra-points for host Mt. Lebanon.

Pine-Richland's Andy Borgen went 17 for 25 for 223 yards and a touchdown. The Rams' Colin Ryan had six receptions for 107 yards -- including a 38-yard touchdown reception -- and Tommy Berexa nine receptions for 93 yards.

OTHER GAMES
Penn-Trafford 31, Peters Township 28

Christian Mossellum's 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter gave the visiting Warriors their only lead of the game -- but it was at the only time that mattered.

Manny Simpson had 43 carries for 230 yards and four touchdowns for Penn-Trafford in a game in which the Indians scored first and the two teams alternated touchdowns the rest of the way until Mossllum's winning field goal.

Peters Township's Justin Miller had rushing touchdowns of 15, 65 and 43 yards. The Indians' Andrew Erenberg had a 28-yard touchdown run that opened the scoring.

Seneca Valley 40, Norwin 24

Donny Holl scored three second-half touchdowns as the visiting Raiders overcame a 24-7 deficit by scoring the final 33 points of the game -- including 26 in the fourth quarter alone of the non-conference win.

Holl, Seneca Valley's quarterback, scored two touchdowns rushing, one receiving on an 18-yard catch from Jordan Glaser and threw a 6-yard touchdown to Troy Witt.

Tim Tetro went 10-for-16 for 175 yards, a touchdown and an interception and two rushing touchdowns for the Knights. Andy Carter had four receptions for 126 yards, including a 52-yard touchdown catch from Tetro. Norwin led, 21-0, in the second quarter.

Bethel Park 48, Kiski Area 20

Bre Ford rushed for 148 yards and three touchdowns, and Nick Kwiatkoski had a touchdown each receiving and rushing for the host Black Hawks in a non-conference victory. Anthony Cinello went 9-for-16 for 128 yards and a touchdown for Bethel Park, which held a 450-109 edge in total yardage and never trailed. The Black Hawks are ranked No. 4 in WPIAL Class AAAA by the Post-Gazette.

Leonard Graham had two of the Cavaliers' three touchdowns, one each rushing and receiving.

North Allegheny 42, State College 7

Alex Papson rushed for 171 yards and four touchdowns and the host Tigers opened the season with an impressive win against the Little Lions of District 6.

Papson, who rushed for 1,092 yards and 15 touchdowns last season, had scoring runs of 2 and 19 yards in the first quarter and 17 and 14 yards in the second quarter.

Dan Slivka had three receptions for 105 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown catch from Mike Buchert in the second quarter. The No. 3 Tigers led, 42-0, at halftime.

Josh Weakland threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Alex Campolongo in the third quarter for State College, which made the PIAA championship game last season.

Plum 27, Franklin Regional 21

Ryan Garrity's 10-yard touchdown reception from Chris Zdinak with 24 seconds to play was the winning score for the visiting Mustangs. Zdinak went 17-for-23 for 246 yards and two touchdowns and added a rushing touchdown. Garrity had six catches for 78 yards, and Plum's C.J. Lutz had five catches for 92 yards.

Chris Little passed for 159 yards and two touchdowns, and Dane Brown scored two touchdowns for the Class AAA Panthers.

Plum held a 361-331 advantage in total yardage, and Franklin Regional was hurt by three turnovers.

Latrobe 34, Derry 24

The Wildcats' Steven Taylor and Scott Mohring each rushed for more than 100 yards and scored two touchdowns in a win at the Class AAA Trojans.

Taylor had 16 carries for 117 yards and touchdowns in the first and second quarter each. Mohring had 108 yards on only seven carries -- scoring on an 83-yard run in the third quarter and also on a 71-yard reception from D.J. Lonigro to open the scoring 2:49 into the contest.Lonigro added a touchdown run for the Wildcats.

Talon Kriebel was 13-for-17 for 156 yards, a touchdown and an interception passing, and he added a rushing touchdown for Derry.

Baldwin 30, Fox Chapel 7

The visiting Highlanders scored on their first two plays from scrimmage and never looked back, taking a 20-0 lead in the first quarter of the non-conference game and cruising.

Baldwin's Nathan Reed passed for 250 yards and rushed for a touchdown, and Dorian Brown had 137 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Montay Green was the lone highlight for the Foxes, rushing for 148 yards and a touchdown.

Brown scored on a 77-yard run to open the scoring, and Garrett Wild had a 57-yard run for a score soon after.

St. Edward, Ohio 65, Penn Hills 25

The Indians struggled in their trip to Lakewood, Ohio, to play one of that state's premiere programs.

Erie McDowell 14, Erie Cathedral Prep 0, suspended

The game between the longtime rivals Trojans and Ramblers was suspended with 8:18 to play in the second quarter because of a power outage at Erie Veterans Stadium. It will resume at 9 a.m. today with Erie McDowell holding possession and a first down at its own 20. The Trojans are in their first season as an official member of the WPIAL.
