Man faces trial in Downtown assault that led to death
Friday, September 03, 2010

A Baldwin Borough man today was ordered to trial on charges that he shoved another man, forcing him into a wall and causing fatal injuries.

Garry Ethridge, 55, is charged with homicide in the July 9 attack on Alan Johnson, 74.

Eyewitnesses said they noticed a disturbance between the two men outside a Wendy's Restaurant on Liberty Avenue, Downtown. It appeared the men were walking away from each other when Mr. Ethridge suddenly turned and shoved the victim.

The push sent Mr. Johnson face-first into the wall, and he immediately collapsed.

Initially he could not speak, but he said moments later that he could not move his legs.

Mr. Johnson was taken to UPMC Mercy, where he died July 18 of respiratory failure.

Mr. Ethridge was arrested July 28.

He is being held in the Allegheny County Jail on $30,000 bail, pending his formal arraignment and trial.
