Auto Racing: Local tracks busy for holiday
Friday, September 03, 2010

Labor Day weekend is here and racing is all around us.

Professional motocross racing on Labor Day isn't new in Western Pennsylvania. Steel City Raceway in Delmont has hosted a race on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend for nearly two decades.

This year, Steel City Raceway hosts the next-to-last race on the 12-event schedule. In previous years, the season ended at Steel City, where the huge berms and deep braking bumps frequently played a role in determining AMA Motocross Champions.

Two titles are still up for grabs.

In the 250cc class, Christophe Pourcel, of France, has a 13-point lead over Trey Canard of Shawnee, Okla.

Ashley Fiolek, 19, a two-time champion in Women's Motocross is going for her third consecutive title but sits 22 points back from rival Jessica Patterson. Fiolek, arguably the biggest star in the sport, knows a little about challenges. She was born deaf but hasn't allowed her disability to stand in her way.

All-Stars at Lernerville

At 7:30 p.m. today at Don Martin's Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, the O'Reilly All-Star Sprints and Late Models will compete in a rare double-bill event. The All-Star Sprints will be led by defending champ and Knoxville Nationals winner Tim Shaffer of Aliquippa. The "Steel City Outlaw" will compete for the first time since his historic win in Knoxville, Iowa.

Shaffer and the All-Stars will face off against newly crowned Lernerville Sprint Car champion Danny Holtgraver along with a stout field of Lernerville regulars.

In the late models, Dave Hess, the 2010 champion at Lernerville, leads the locals against the traveling late model series regulars led by current point leader Rob Blair.

Herb Scott honored

Local stock car legend Herb Scott will be honored with a dedication of a bronze plaque at 7p.m. today during a ceremony at the Northway Christian Community's Friday Night Car Cruise in Wexford. Scott dominated local racing for decades and retired in 1979 with 520 feature wins. Scott, a Wexford resident and businessman, died in May at the age of 83.
