Game of the Week: Montour vs. Chartiers Valley
Capers makes all the difference for Colts
Friday, September 03, 2010

Chartiers Valley quarterback Wayne Capers has been testing his foot all summer long. Now, Montour will test his other skills.

Capers, who missed the final five games last season after incurring a broken bone in his foot, will lead Chartiers Valley, the Post-Gazette's fourth-ranked WPIAL Class AAA team, against No. 3 Montour tonight to open the 2010 season.

When Capers played last season, the Colts were strong. Chartiers Valley beat eventual WPIAL champion West Allegheny -- on the road -- to open the season and was undefeated with Capers taking snaps.

"He's a special kind of player," Montour coach Lou Cerro said. "He can do it with his legs, He can do it with his arms. You've just got to try to contain him."

But when Capers was sidelined with his foot injury, the Colts weren't the same, losing two of their last five games, including a 19-7 loss to Hampton in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs.

Montour possess one of the best young arms in the WPIAL in junior quarterback Dillon Buechel, who threw for 1,872 yards and 10 touchdowns last season.

Cerro said his quarterback has improved greatly since last season.

"He's a more confident person," Cerro said. "He has a Division I arm with a Division I mind."

And with running back Julian Durden, a junior transfer from North Catholic, fullback Anthony Rippole and four returning starters on the offensive line, Montour also will have one of the top running attacks in Class AAA.

Today

• Game: No. 3 Montour vs. No. 4 Chartiers Valley, 7:10 p.m.

• Where: Montour's Thomas J. Birko Stadium, Robinson.

• On the line: Bragging rights in Class AAA.
